In ATP 6-22.1, there’s a wonderful tool for self-examination and self-awareness called the Johari Window. You can get a great look at the Johari Window in action by checking out this YouTube video from Smarter Every Day.
Destin’s Smarter Every Day video is what introduced me to the Johari Window and my research led me to discovering it in ATP 6-22.1. After doing some additional research on the Johari Window, I noticed very clear parallels with content in ADP 6-22 and the Army Leadership Requirements Model.
I created a moral leadership LPD that combined the Johari Window, content from ADP 6-22, and the Army Leadership Requirements Model. Make sure you read ATP 6-22.1 and watch Destin’s video to understand how this tool works.
In practice, this LPD serves to build to trust in a unit by encouraging self-awareness, humility, and appropriate self-disclosure. I led my own unit officers and senior NCOs through it and we had a good deal of fruitful discussion. My Religious Affairs NCO and I also used the Johari Window in our quarterly counseling to help build trust and awareness within our team.
Before the LPD, I provided the following document as a read-ahead to all the attendees. The document is several pages of selected excerpts from ADP 6-22 discussing the importance of self-awareness for Army leaders.
